A city break means long days on your feet, changeable weather and an evening out at the end of it, often from one small bag. Plan around layers and colours that all work together, and you'll pack less and look better.
What to wear, piece by piece
- Jacket
- A light jacket you can wear or carry all day: an overshirt, field jacket or light mac, depending on the forecast.
- Top
- T-shirts, a casual shirt or polo, and a knit that layers over both. Pack one slightly smarter shirt for the evening.
- Trousers
- Chinos and dark jeans. Two pairs that go with every top are enough for a long weekend.
- Shoes
- Comfortable shoes you've already worn in, such as clean leather trainers or suede boots. A smarter second pair if you have room.
- Extras
- Sunglasses, a compact umbrella or packable layer, and a small crossbody bag or tote for the day.
What to avoid
- Brand-new shoes on a walking day.
- Too many statement pieces in a small bag. They won't mix.
- Sportswear for the evening; a fresh shirt makes all the difference.
Two ways to wear it
Navy overshirt, white T-shirt, stone chinos and white leather trainers. Swap the T-shirt for an Oxford shirt in the evening.
Olive field jacket, cream knit, dark jeans and brown suede Chelsea boots, with a navy linen shirt for dinner.
Quick questions
How much should I pack for three days?
Two pairs of trousers, three or four tops, one knit, one jacket and two pairs of shoes. If everything is neutral, it all mixes.
What about a hot city?
Linen and cotton in light colours, a short-sleeved shirt for the evening, and loafers or canvas shoes instead of boots.
